Scaling Circular Infrastructure with PHA as binder in bitumen

HighTechBinders licenses TNO technology to integrate Caleyda biopolymers as a binder in bitumen

Real impact in the transition to sustainable infrastructure requires strong partnerships and scalable technology. HighTechBinders has officially licensed circular asphalt binder technology from TNO, and to accelerate this transition, HighTechBinders has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and an offtake agreement with us for the supply of our biobased polymer, Caleyda.

This collaboration enables a “local-to-local” circular model. By using our biopolymer Caleyda as a functional component in asphalt, we strengthen the mechanical properties of bitumen. The result? More durable roads with a significantly lower environmental footprint.

Key impact drivers:

  • Carbon Sequestration: Integrating Caleyda into asphalt “stores” 2 kg of CO2 per kg of biopolymer.
  • Circular Resources: We are replacing fossil-based components with bio-based resources recovered from waste streams, without compromising on performance or road longevity.
  • Industry Targets: This is a direct enabler for the sector to meet the 2030 target of 30% biobased content and the 2050 goal of carbon-neutral infrastructure.

By bridging the gap between scientific research (TNO), sustainable raw materials (Paques Biomaterials), and commercial application (HighTechBinders), we are building the resilient infrastructure of tomorrow.
